For years walking past the last place we kissed brought back memories that ate at my heart. For years walking past that spot I couldn’t help but pause and breathe in what used to be. I walked past that spot today. It looks the same. The brick building. The black metal fence. The neatly placed trees. I didn’t pause this time though. I didn’t stop to remember what once was. I passed right by without a second thought and it wasn’t until I was a block away that I realized how much you don’t mean to me anymore.

I’m watching high school girls watch high school boys play basketball and they’re just sitting on the sidelines giggling and occasionally the ball comes to them and they giggle and pretend to shoot the ball and they either suck at basketball or are trying to flirt because the ball never gets close to the basket. I love the world at one in the morning. The dripping pipes, the creaking houses, the mist surrounding the street lamps. I love the momentary quiet; the clacking of my boots on pavement and and the sound of my breath in still air. I love the calm that comes with the darkness. I love being the only one awake to watch the dewy trees against the moonlight. I love the stillness of the stars and the silence of the humidity against my cheeks.
